PTHS Graphic Arts 3 - Course Summary Description

The goal of this course is to teach students how to use a digital video camera and import video clips into iMovie - a video editing software application sold by Apple Inc. for the Mac. Upon successful completion, students will use iMovie easy-to-use software to edit and create a linear presentation and to make their own desktop movies in interesting ways without the use of a technical manual. Emphasis will be placed on the process of planning, shooting, editing, and presenting a movie. An exploratory approach will be taken to the introduction of GarageBand - a whole music creation studio right inside your Mac — with a complete sound library that includes software instruments, presets for guitar, piano, and voice, and virtual session drummers that allow users to create music or podcasts.

The other part of the course is to teach students about the Screen-Printing industry and focus on the main areas: Design, Fundamentals, Procedures of Silk Screen, and Business Marketing. Students will gain entry-level competency in the hands-on skills needed for employment (or starting their own business) in a screen-printing shop by learning the proper techniques and methods for printing t-shirts, sweatshirts, posters, and cardboard in single and multiple colors. They will also gain an awareness of the steps involved in constructing a printing screen frame, using different types of mesh, preparing emulsions, exposing screens, inks or dyes, and printing the color runs – plus a list of various problems that might turn up and their solutions and how to solve them.

Students will also complete a Graphic Design Portfolio (A compilation of materials that exemplify your beliefs, skills, qualifications, education, training and experience.). Students will use assignment samples from Graphic Arts 1 & 2 that will be displayed in a digital slideshow format. An introduction to InDesign - a desktop publishing software application for creating flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, and books will be explored.
