School Health Services & Regulations
When school-age children complain about not feeling well on a school day, a decision must be made as to whether or not the child should go to school. You don't want to keep a child home sick if the child is not sick, but you don't want to send a sick child to school. Some guidelines to consider at times like this are:
FEVER: No child with a temperature of 100 or higher should go to school. If your child is sick (for any reason), keep your child home and contact the school to notify us of their symptoms and absence. A child sent home with a fever (100 degrees Fahenheit or above) should not return to school until the temperature has been (less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for 24 hours without medication. Please follow up with a doctor if necessary.
COMMON COLD: Children with heavy cold symptoms and hacking coughs should remain at home. Please follow up with your child's doctor and notify the school nurse.
RASH: A child with a rash should not be sent to school until it has been determined not to be contagious by a health care provider in writing.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: Measles, mumps, strep throat, ringworm, chicken pox, pink eye, etc; students must have a doctor's note upon returning to school. Ringworm must be covered while at school.
VOMITING AND DIARRHEA: A child who has diarrhea or vomiting cannot be sent to school. A child who has been sent home due to diarrhea or vomiting should remain home the rest of the day and the following day or longer until symptom free. If necessary, please follow up with your child's physician for further guidance.
TOOTHACHE: Seek doctor and/or dental advice as soon as possible.
EARACHE: Contact your child's doctor as soon as possible.
HEADACHE: Please monitor your child and if other symptoms exist, for example: sore throat, fever, please continue to monitor your child at home as well as contact your child's physician if severe.
PEDICULOSIS (LICE): Students with live head lice should remain at home and be treated. Please contact the school nurse or your child's doctor for further instruction. Upon entry back to school, the school nurse examines your child and clears child to return. Parents/guardians will have to remain present at school until the child has been examined by the school nurse.
REMINDER: Please do not send cough drops to school with your child. If medication is required for your child during the school year, please complete the medication request form and have an adult bring the medication to your child's school nurse along with the signed medication permission form from the doctor. A doctors' note is required when your child returns to school from an absence due to illness or injury.

Please remember to update your emergency phone number as changes occur. Send in new phone numbers and contact information with your child or contact the main office. Any students with asthma, food allergies, insect sting allergies or any other medical conditions that may require medication and treatment during school need to submit medical paperwork by their physician for the current school year. Remember all medications are to be brought to the school nurse by an adult.
