Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Susan Austin
With the exception of two years as a fifth grade teacher, I have been teaching as a reading specialist for 31 years. I have taught in New York, Massachusetts and am currently at Fort Dix. I have a Masters Degree in Reading from New York University and have perfected my skills over the years. I have been trained in the reading recovery program and am now using the Fundations and Just Words programs. Reporting to work everyday is exciting because I am fulfilling my goal of helping struggling readers to succeed and to develop a love for reading.
It is my belief that every child can learn to read. All that is necessary is for me to find the pathway, that is , the right skills and strategies to reach your child. Rather than give up on a child, I look for ways to reach him or her. Every student is unique and what modality or strategy works with one may not work with another. I strive to be creative in my teaching and have infinite patience. I work hard to instill confidence and make every child feel good about themselves. Learning to read can be a journey, but in the end I love to see the smile on a face when the light bulb goes off and the child sees that he or she is reading!
If you need to contact me, for any assistance with your child, please do not hesitate. I look forward to a great school year working with your child!
