Procedures for Opting Out of Specific Curriculum Content
Curriculum that Applies: In accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.4.e, a parent or guardian can opt their child out of K–12 health, family life education, or sex education, as well as K–5 LGBTQ instruction, if the content conflicts with their conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs.
Parental Review of Curriculum: In accordance N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.1.a.3, all Pemberton Township Schools’ K–12 curriculum guides are available online for review. The curriculum guides can be found on our district website by clicking on “Departments” and then “Curriculum.”
Written Notice to the School Principal: If a parent or guardian wishes to opt their child out of the applicable curriculum outlined in N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.4.e, they must submit a signed statement to the school principal identifying the specific lesson(s) from which they would like their child to be excused.
Alternative Learning: A student whose parent has opted them out of a specific lesson will report to an alternative location in the school during that instructional time and will read or engage in another learning activity provided by the teacher.
